Louis Icart
French (1890 - 1950)

Les Amours de Psyche et de Cupidon - 1949

The book by Jean de la Fontaine with illustrations by Louis Icart consists of 22 full page color etchings and 2 partial page color etchings as chapter headings, plus one addition etching at the end of the book. The book was published in 1949 and is Icart's last illustrated book. The illustrations are quite spectacular and are not published in the common Icart references. In fact, Schnessel indicates 20 full page etchings and 4 partial plates which is incorrect. The edition is 150 plus hors commerce, printed on either Arches or Rives. The total number of pages is 240 and the text is in French. The page size is 10 x 13 1/4" and the full page plate size is 6 1/2 x 9 1/4".

We have two of the special books that contain one complete set of 24 etchings in color, one complete set with remarques in b/w, and one complete set in sepia without remarques. Each book contains one additional etching in b/w at either the beginning or end of the text. The books are #7 and #8 and contain a copper plate bound into the book, plus the original signed drawing of the same work. The text, etchings, copper plate, and drawing are bound in a leather case with the copper plate attached as part of the reverse of the front cover. The binding is done by Le Dourain and the book is contained in a slip-case. The book is complete with no wear to the binding and only minor wear to the slip-case.
