The lithographs and etchings of
Raphael Soyer
American (1899-1987)
Raphael Soyer was a Russian-born painter, twin to the artist
Moses Soyer (1899-1974) and the older brother of the painter
Isaac Soyer (1907-1981).
"During the 1930's their work was typical of the Social Realism
practiced by the American Scene painters, depicting the lives of
working people with sympathy and at times a touching air of melancholy,
as in Raphael's well-known 'Office Girls' (Whitney Museum of American
Art, New York, 1936)." (The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art and
Artists, edited by Ian Chilvers). Refer to "Ralphael Soyer - fifty years of printmaking 1917-1967 by Sylvan Cole, Jr.
